Elementary Licensure
According to the BLS, licensed elementary teachers should enjoy excellent career prospects. There are several routes into elementary teaching and several different requirements to enable you to obtain licensure.
The importance of elementary licensure
The USA has both public and private schools. To teach in a public school, elementary teachers require at least a bachelor’s degree and licensure. Private schools do not always require either of these, but offer far less career prospects. In addition to your degree, you also need to complete an approved teacher training program, plus sufficient subject and education credits to gain licensure. You will also need some teaching experience.
To gain licensure, you will be tested in basic skills, such as reading and writing, your proficiency in your chosen subject - in this case elementary education, and in your teaching skills. You will therefore also need some teaching experience.
The future of licensure
In certain cases, when there is a severe shortage of teachers in a certain subject, you may be able to gain licensure without all of the above. You will be closely monitored for your first few years of teaching to ensure your suitability for elementary education. In future, all licensure may move towards this method. Once you have started your teaching, most states require you to continue your education to retain your licensure. This is usually in the form of a master’s degree.
