What are the Most Popular Degrees?

Some types of degree topics are easier than others to study online. Clearly, there are some that it would be impractical to try to learn at a distance such as those that rely on manual skills or require intensive one on one tuition such as fine art. There are many reasons why certain subjects are more popular than others. It might be that the subject area is highlighted in the media or certain areas might be perceived as being fashionable. Of course, some degree topics are extremely flexible and are used across a wide variety of industries and types of career. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (part of the US Department of Education) in 2003 the most popular degree was business. In fact, it is twice as popular as its nearest rival: social sciences and history. Business lends itself to distance learning, and can be readily transferred between industries; two likely reasons for its popularity. Even not for profit, educational and governmental departments need to run organizations and schools in an efficient manner.

Social sciences and education were the next most popular. Again, everybody goes to school so you can see why this would be a good topic to study for a degree. Other popular topics were biological and biomedical studies, communications and journalism, computer and information sciences, engineering and engineering technologies, health professions and related clinical sciences, psychology, and visual and performing arts. An online degree will not guarantee you a career. There are some areas that attract a large number of gifted people, so you would need to be exceptionally talented to succeed.
