ASE Certification
What is the ASE?
ASE stands for Automotive Service Excellence. Established in 1972, the
ASE organization has as its mission to improve training, safety, and performance
of technicians nationwide. The ASE has created a certification program
and testing procedure that allows interested technicians to display their
knowledge and skill in a variety of automotive system repairs. The certification
program is a combination of concepts testing and hands-on experience that
allows candidates to demonstrate their proficiency in critical aspects
of auto repair. The ASE certification is the preferred credential for
employers of auto technicians and professionals with this certification
will typically get their pick of available positions over those without.
ASE Certification Concepts
The ASE certification program is a robust compilation of concepts grouped
into specialties that include automobile, medium/heavy truck, truck equipment,
school bus, collision repair technicians, engine machinists, alternate
fuels technicians, parts specialists, auto service consultants, and collision
damage estimators. You can earn ASE certification in one or more of these
areas through pencil and paper exams given throughout the Unites States.
As the tests are very challenging, it is estimated that one out of every
three candidates fails the test the first time around. When you pass your
ASE certification exam, you'll wear the ASE patch on your uniform for
your clients to see.
How can I get ASE Certification?
If you're presently employed by a car and truck dealership, an independent
garage, a fleet, a service station, or a franchise, you can earn your
ASE certification by taking and passing one of the specialized exams and
showing proof of your work experience. Once you have passed your test,
you must retest in the field every five years to keep your certification.
