Drafting
If you are artistic, spatially aware and skilled in technology, you may wish to consider a career in drafting. Drafters prepare technical drawings and plans in a whole range of industries, including architecture, mechanical and civil engineering. Architectural drafting requires the drawing of the architectural and structural features of buildings and other structures. There is scope to specialize in residential or commercial structure, or materials such as concrete, masonry, steel and timber.
Drafting Schools
Drafting traditionally required drawing boards, but now use CADD systems. However drafters still need to be trained, skilled professionals to carry out their role. Training in drafting ranges from certification to studying drafting as part of a wider degree. Modern drafting schools combine the fundamentals of drafting with the up-do-date CADD systems. You can choose to study full-time, part-time or online.
Careers in Drafting
There is a wide range of careers available in drafting post-training. As drafting becomes more dependent on technology, opportunities will be best for drafters with at least two years’ training. In addition to architecture, you can specialize in aeronautical drafting, electrical drafting, mechanical drafting and process piping or pipeline drafting. Architecture and construction offer the most opportunities.
